What is Natural Hair?

Defining What Natural Hair Means to You

It seems so simple to define what natural hair is, right? I mean, it’s the texture of the hair as it is in its unaltered state. While that is true, there is much more to it. Where does hair dying fall in? How about flat irons, blow outs, and extensions? Do those actions make a women’s hair less natural?

The answer is all about how you perceive your natural hair and what makes you natural. To make this idea more concrete, I will tell you how I feel about my natural process. Here is what makes me natural:

1. I wear my hair the way it grows out of my scalp as far as texture goes

2. I love and am proud of my natural hair as opposed to fearing it or hiding it

3. Hair color and the occasional straightening is equivalent to wearing hoop earrings or any other accessory

4. Hair extensions fall into the accessory category as well

Essentially, I perceive natural hair as wearing your hair as it is; no permanent alterations to make it something it is not. Since I am confident in how I define my idea of what natural hair is, I feel perfectly content with dying my hair if I so choose and not feeling like a sell out. Do what you feel is right for you; not the next one.
